The Statement of Black Hair

Artist's Statement and Commentary:

Hi! I'm Zamiya. I made this collection of pieces to represent black hair as ordinarily extraordinary. I wanted to show the amazing details and intricacies of black hair and let its complexity speak for itself. I also wanted to show how our hair’s simplicity is in fact elegant and breathtaking.

My pieces are in the sky or floating in unimaginable places. I wanted to correlate this idea of black hair being “out of this world” to the backgrounds I used in my paintings. For me, it assures me that even in my most ordinary state my hair exudes unimaginable beauty.
